“Wheels for All” by Harrow Cycle Hub
Impact assessment
challenge
The challenge faced by HCH was ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Wheels for All initiative which supports those with difficulty in cycling - mainly disabled children and adults. This required establishing enduring relationships with health and social care commissioners while also demonstrating the tangible health and wellbeing benefits for participants and their caretakers to secure ongoing support and funding
OUR APPROACH
As a research provider, we conducted an interview with 26 people who attend the Wheels for All sessions by HCH with 17 participants, 5 parents and 4 support workers in the UK to gain a better understanding of this cycling service, evaluate the outcomes of WFA for participants, parents and support workers.
THE INSIGHT
The initiative is highly valued by participants, parents, and carers for its engaging and inclusive cycling sessions, with the cycling activity and outdoor setting being the most appreciated elements. There is unanimous agreement on the program's positive impact, with a recurring demand for more sessions to meet the high need for physical activity in this community.
THE IMPACT
The Wheels for All program at HCH is widely praised by participants, parents/carers, and support workers for its transformative impact on physical and mental well-being. For many, it is the only opportunity to cycle, with over half experiencing their first successful cycling moments through the program. The sessions improve key areas such as confidence, motor skills, social interaction, and independence while fostering a sense of community in a safe, inclusive environment.
